Last hurrah!

This is our last weekend of operation at the shop. Sad. We will be in 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so come by and see us. While we aren't quite ready to make an official announcement, let's just say this is not the last you will be seeing of the Wheelhouse this year. If you want to keep up-to-date, be sure to sign up for our E-Blasts at wheelhousedetroit.com. They come just once a month.

Fall hours + Tours + Recreation Passport

Today, we kick off our fall hours: Friday, Saturday & Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. While we are sad to shrink our hours, we are glad when we look back at this wonderful summer! We've added five tours to our October roster, including favorites like Eastern Market, Hamtramck and Haunted Detroit. Note: We are only accepting five Groupons per tour. More info at wheelhousedetroit.com/tours.

Beginning October 1, the state of Michigan is changing how its state parks are funded. There is a $10 Recreation Passport from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, which will replace the state park sticker to provide access to all state parks and recreation areas, including:

  • All 98 state parks and recreation areas
  • 133 state forest campgrounds
  • Nearly 1,000 miles of hiking, biking and skiing trails
  • More than 1,000 boat launches
  • Historic and cultural sites in state parks

What's more, 10% of all funds from the DNRE Recreation Passport will be directed to county, city and township parks through grant-funding. When you opt-in to the Recreation Passport, you are not only supporting the beautiful natural resources managed by the DNRE, but contributing towards an additional funding source for local parks.

To get your Recreation Passport, simply check "YES" on your license plate renewal form. In other states, this has been a boon to recreation funding.

Tours + Tour de Troit

We are getting calls from Grouponers about the fact that our tours for the season are pretty much sold out. While we are very sorry that we won't be able to ride with you this year, we did offer 50 (yes, 50!) tours throughout the season, plenty of which were not sold out. We are exceedingly busy this week with the Tour de Troit, which has 3,225 (!) riders registered! We are looking forward to a stellar 9th edition of the TdT! See you at Roosevelt Park or at the shop for packet pick-up!

One last note, M-Bike has a great summary of all the cycling activities going on around town this weekend. With PEAC's ride last weekend to kick things off, we hope to evolve this into a proper Detroit Bike Week really soon.

Detroit Bikes SW Bike Tour

From our friends at Detroit Bikes! Sunday, September 19th The Great Southwest Detroit Industrial (Wasteland?) Bicycle Tour Detroit Bikes! is always on the lookout for new themes for our rides. Mike Krzesicki, a Detroit Bikes regular, used his unique imagination and put together a southwest side tour. This isn't your typical suburban ride through pretty neighborhoods with picket fences bordered by flower beds. Rather, this route takes us through much of the industrial underbelly of southwest Detroit. Strangely, even poetically, residences are sprinkled throughout the heavy industry complexes.  As I tested the route (on a motorcycle), the imagery of "little houses on the prairie" kept popping into my head.  I am confident that you, like me, will ride away from this tour with a new appreciation of the industry that has powered our economy.

We will have one or two beverage/food stops, probably on Vernor Ave. in Mexicantown.
Here are the ride particulars, or as the iconic (well, to me, at least!) Sergeant Joe Friday, Badge 714, used to say: Just the Facts.
Who: Sponsored by Detroit Bikes!, a project of Detroit Synergy (detroitsynergy.org)
What: The Great Southwest Detroit Industrial (Wasteland)Bicycle Tour
Where: Start at the Millennium Bell, Grand Circus Park, in downtown Detroit. The Bell is located in the NE portion of the park adjacent to Comerica Park.
Parking: Street parking for autos, trucks, and other cages is generally abundant on Sunday mornings.
Date: Sunday, September 19, 2010
Time: Start at 10:00 AM SHARP!
Ending Time: Approximately 1:00 PM
Distance: Approximately 19 miles (about 30 kilometers)
Pace: Leisurely pace, suitable for all levels of riders.
Cost: Free!! But bring cash for beverages and food, if desired.
Rain Date: NONE!  The ride will go on regardless of rain, snow, flying carp, Lions victories,  mayfly infestations, or earthquakes.
Reservations:  None needed!  Just be there!  Although an e-mail would be appreciated.
For Further Information (there really isn't any!), contact me at pagete@gmail.com or 313-473-7118.
Needs:  As always, we can always use help in taking care of the following tasks: obtaining waiver signatures at the start; emergency bike repairs, primarily fixing flats; tour group integrity, such as sweeps; SAG (support and gear) support; photographing the event.
Helmets: Required.

What to expect from a Wheelhouse E-Blast

  1. We only send out one a month.
  2. We promote our business with sales and info about tours, while also touting other area rides.
  3. We aim to not be boring.

Check out our September E-Blast below the jump and, if you like what you see, sign up at wheelhousedetroit.com.

Hello there, Friend of Wheelhouse!

I know we're a few days early, but we are really excited for September to get here. Why is that? Great cycling weather and our favorite day of the year, Tour de Troit! It's on for September 25 and you can find info and a link to register at tour-de-troit.org. You should do so by the 7th to get a t-shirt. We also need a lot of volunteers -- since we are planning on 3,500 riders! -- and info about signing up can be found here. And check out the sweet event poster here!

Sales! There is a ton of construction around here, enough that we know it's been hard to come visit us for the last few weeks. So we're having an Orange Cones and Barricades Sale! Come down for specials on bikes: $250 off the Honky Tonk road bike, $100 off the must-ride-to-believe Jake cyclocross and $30 off all other bikes in stock, including the bada** Humu! Check out all of our fine specimens at our blog's Bikes for Sale page. We're also offering 15% off locks, helmets, racks & baskets. The sale runs until September 15, and we hope that it makes it worth navigating the dust to come see us!

We are also offering a fall tune-up special: $40 for the whole she-bang -- that's a tenner off the regular price. So drop your steed off to get it in shape for the Tour de Troit and all your other autumn riding!

Tours While our tour season is slowing down, there are still plenty of chances to ride with us. We have a handful of openings on both of our tours this weekend, Gallery Scene Friday night at 5:30 p.m. and Arts Incubators on Sunday at noon.

Labor Day weekend, we'll head to Southwest Detroit at 10 a.m. on Saturday 09/05 and celebrate our Industrial Heritage at 2 p.m. on Sunday 09/06. The rest of the month, we'll take on Architecture and Urban Agriculture and wrap up in October with Conner Creek Greenway, Eastern Market, Underground Railroad and Haunted Detroit!

Read more and register at our Tours Page. We also offer private group tours and special discounts for groups of six to 20. Give us a call at 313-656-2453 and we'll set something up!

TONIGHT! Critical Mass & Walk-In Theatre Friday night 08/27 is the monthly edition of Critical Mass, which starts at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of Warren and Trumbull. Afterwards, we are partnering with Walk-In Theatre to present a double feature with two of our favorite two-wheeled films: TRON and Breaking Away! Join us at dusk:thirty at Peck Park, located at the corner of Beaubien and East Kirby, behind CCS. There will even be a s'more station! Check out the flyer for more info here.

Yoga+Jazz+Vote+Ride A few final miscellanea: Saturday 08/28 at 3 p.m. is Yoga for Cyclists at Spirit of Hope Church in North Corktown. More info at peoplesyogadetroit.org.

We will be manning bike parking at this year's Detroit Jazz Fest. So if you come down to Hart Plaza, we'll keep an eye on your bike gratis!

Tuesday, 08/31 is the deadline to Vote 4 the Best Bike Shop on the WDIV Click on Detroit site. Cast one for your very own little bike shop that could, Wheelhouse, at cityvoter.com. Thanks!

There are a couple of other fund-raising rides this month we'd like to direct your attention to: 09/12, the Tour de Ford, which has two routes that both stop at Henry Ford Hospital in New Center, and 09/18, PEAC's Celebration of Cycling, which rides along the always-lovely Hines Drive.
